Tobacco Warehouses of Kavala

In its initial phase (1860-1912) the construction of tobacco warehouses was carried out using traditional methods, mainly as two-story structures with a loft and gable roof, in the form of an individual business. In the case of the city of Kavala, we find 59 of the 156 buildings, either individually or in building complexes, with the majority of them being constructions related to the period of 1930, while the newer ones are fewer. The different manufacturing periods also reveal different needs in terms of tobacco processing and trade. The first constructions, from the 1860s to the 1930s, initially concerned processing, storage and office-administration areas. The tobacco was processed either in the same place or in neighboring tobacco warehouses.
